Program
Description
Recent phase III cooperative group trials have re-established the role of platinum-based
therapy in advanced NSCLC (S9509, E1594, C9730). Controversy still remains with respect to
the use of non-platinum regimens, particularly for the treatment of elderly and PS 2
patients. New trials will also determine the role of platinum for resectable stage I-III
NSCLC, in combination with new agents in SCLC, and how to optimize delivery of
platinum-based chemotherapy in all stages of lung cancer (eg., new weekly regimens). Also,
the role of newly targeted molecular agents is still evolving, with respect to combining
these new agents with chemotherapy. This program will provide a foundation for evaluating
future clinical investigations in lung cancer.
Program
Objectives
Upon completion of this
educational activity, participants should be able to:
Section 1
1. Discuss the rationale
to explore new treatment options in all stages of lung cancer.
2. Describe the evolving role of novel therapies in combination with platinum therapy.
3. Identify the advantages and disadvantages with the use of platinum therapy.
4. Identify ongoing and future clinical investigations for the treatment of early stage
NSCLC.
Section 2
1. Discuss the rationale
to explore new treatment options in advanced lung cancer.
2. Describe the evolving role of novel therapies in combination with platinum therapy.
3. Identify the advantages and disadvantages with the use of platinum therapy.
4. Identify ongoing and future clinical investigations for the treatment of advanced lung
cancer.
Section 3
1. Discuss the rationale
to explore new treatment options in advanced lung cancer.
2. Describe the evolving role of novel therapies in combination with platinum therapy.
3. Identify the advantages and disadvantages with the use of platinum therapy in elderly,
PS2 patients.
4. Identify ongoing and future clinical investigations for stage III lung cancer.
Section 4
1. Discuss the rationale
to explore new treatment options in SCLC.
2. Describe the evolving role of novel therapies in combination with platinum therapy.
